Job Description
General Definition of Work

The crew chief, maintenance, under general supervision, performs journey-level work with limited decision-making discretion supporting the construction, installation, renovation, maintenance, and repair of district buildings, grounds, systems, and properties. Position develops work schedules for staff and monitors completion of assigned work. Employee performs both school-based and district-level work to carry-out Board of Education policies under the direction of the Supervisor, Maintenance Operations.

Place of Work

The normal place of work is on the premises used by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time.

Essential Functions
  • Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures
  • Participate in the construction, installation, renovation, maintenance, and repair of district facilities by utilizing tools, materials, and equipment appropriate to the maintenance trade
  • Perform skilled journey level work for the assigned trade
  • Lead and serve as the technical expert for an assigned crew. Guide, direct, and coach others regarding application and interpretation of technical trade skills
  • Plan, prioritize, and assign work tasks to crew members
  • Instruct crew members in proper work methods and standards, monitor crew work quality, ensure adherence to time schedules and safe work practices, provide performance feedback, and input performance evaluations
  • Identify areas needing repair or maintenance and take corrective action
  • Maintain accurate records of material and costs
  • Provide input on the selection of crew members
  • Assist the supervisor with getting quotes for contract assignments when required
  • Safely operate a district fleet vehicle to travel to assigned job sites, ensuring compliance with all traffic laws and company driving policies
  • Maintain the vehicle in clean, orderly, and serviceable condition, promptly reporting any maintenance needs, damage, or safety concerns
  • Perform related work as assigned or required

  • Knowledge of standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in relevant trade
  • Knowledge of work hazards and applicable safety precautions for relevant trade
  • Knowledge of district purchasing policies and practices
  • Skilled in supervision including communication, motivation, and performance feedback
  • Skilled in the operation of required equipment, tools, and instruments
  • Skilled in writing routine reports and documents
  • Ability to assign and supervise work, provide instruction, and lead a small crew
  • Ability to read and interpret documents and construction drawings
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to lift heavy objects and perform heavy manual labor
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships
