Job summary

General Dynamics NASSCO is seeking a Safety Representative to provide health and safety guidance across the shipyard in San Diego, ensuring compliance with Federal, State, and local regulations. You will report to the Supervisor of Safety and collaborate with Production, Repair, Maintenance, Medical, and Emergency Response teams.

You will assist in inspections, investigations, training, and safety program administration, while supporting audits and enforcement of safety policies.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• 1 year experience as Safety Representative at NASSCO, or 2 years in safety enforcement in industrial/construction settings.
• Continuing education toward Professional Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent.
• Must communicate effectively in oral and written form with management and employees.
• Must be able to obtain access to military bases.
• Knowledge of OSHA regulations; hazard recognition; safe work practices.
• Experience with shipyard operations, ship configuration, and related procedures.
• Proficiency with Word processing and spreadsheet software (Word, Excel, WordPerfect, Lotus).

Responsibilities

• Assist Safety Manager and other safety personnel in routine duties; perform inspections and investigations.
• Conduct daily area inspections for regulatory compliance and safety policies.
• Prepare reports on inspections, accidents, injuries, and complaints.
• Write safety articles and train colleagues; review subordinate reports.
• Deliver safety training classes and subcontractor orientations.
• Stay current with OSHA and safety standards through literature review.
• Attend safety meetings with management and safety committees.
• Communicate with managers across departments about safety needs.
• Support Safety Management System audits and enforcement of policies.
