Job summary

South Middlesex Opportunity Council, Inc. in Worcester, MA seeks a Program Advocate to oversee shelter operations during shifts and maintain a safe environment.

The role requires vigilance, logging, and coordination with staff. Strong emphasis on confidentiality and client respect; CPR/First Aid certification and sobriety requirements apply. This position involves evening/weekend hours and a 37.5-hour week.

Qualifications

• CPR and First Aid certification is required.
• Ability to respond effectively in crisis situations.
• Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs of low income individuals.
• Excellent interpersonal communication skills are essential.
• Knowledge of substance abuse and mental illness is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Be alert to shelter surroundings and respond to issues during each shift.
• Maintain the safety of clients and staff during each shift.
• Check with other staff and read logs for information from previous shift.
• Maintain logs and files for each shift.
• Report problems and rule infractions to the Program Director in writing; report emergencies to the supervisor.
• Attend regular staff meetings and participate in training.
• Treat guests with dignity and maintain confidentiality and appropriate boundaries.
• Ensure rounds are completed every 15 minutes.
• Engage clients by understanding and addressing their needs within scope of work.
• Communicate effectively with clients and staff in other areas.
