Job summary

DESC's West Wing Shelter in Seattle seeks energized Shelter Coordinators to manage daily operations and deliver essential survival services as part of a large, compassionate team. You will enforce rules, intervene in client crises, assist with meals, supervise volunteers, and coordinate services with partner agencies to ensure a safe, respectful environment for residents in homelessness recovery.

Qualifications

• Basic understanding of homelessness and characteristics of homeless adult populations.
• Ability to communicate and work effectively with staff from diverse backgrounds.
• Ability to work with clients displaying challenging behaviors.
• Commitment to cooperation and continuity across programs, and respect for clients.

Responsibilities

• Maintain order and enforce agency/site rules and policies.
• Intervene in client crises (medical, mental health, interpersonal).
• Provide information on social/health services and procedures to clients.
• Refer clients to more extensive services when needed.
• Work with volunteers, case managers, mental health providers and other staff.
• Assist with food service preparation, organization, serving and cleanup.
• Register clients and document services during shifts.
• Monitor shelter areas to ensure safety and security.
• Observe client behaviors and intervene to discourage illicit activities.
• Participate in staff meetings and in-service trainings.
• Other duties as assigned.
