Job summary

Lutheran Social Services CHOICES for Victims of Domestic Violence seeks a Shelter Advocate to support residents in Franklin County. The role includes greeting residents, coordinating shelter services, and assisting with donations and crisis response.

Training and a commitment to serving victims of domestic violence are essential. The position offers full-time or part-time schedules with days or evenings and pay up to $18/hr based on experience.

Shelter Advocate

Lutheran Social Services CHOICES for Victims of Domestic Violence has been the sole resource for victims seeking shelter in Franklin County for more than four decades, providing a Temporary Emergency Shelter, 24-Hour Crisis Hotline, DV Counseling, Legal Advocacy, Peer Support Groups and more.

What will I do as a Shelter Advocate with Lutheran Social Services?


  • Greets all volunteers, residents, and prospective residents. Provides communication, information, and supplies to residents as needed related to shelter services including bed assignments, locker assignments, towels, bedding, and self-care supplies.

  • Maintains overall cleanliness and sanitation of shelter facility including resident dorms, hallways, floors and lounges in assigned areas.

  • Assigns and supervises resident service work and encourages residents to fully participate in agency services and campus community.

  • Holds shelter residents accountable for upholding shelter rules and expectations. Communicates any issues or concerns to Director or Case Manager as appropriate.

  • Takes resident attendance, maintains bed count, and ensures shelter capacity.

  • Assists in donation receiving and delivery.

  • Provides information to clients on CHOICES and other services such as medical, dental and vision care, community resources and diversion services during absence or high-volume times.

  • Facilitate shift report to oncoming shift personnel.

  • Escort volunteers and staff between buildings as needed.

  • Assist with shelter laundry services.

  • Backs up Admissions Specialists as needed on Crisis Hotline calls.

  • Follow all protocols related to the security cameras, emergency evacuation and access to the building.


Requirements for a Shelter Advocate with Lutheran Social Services:


  • High School degree, GED, or equivalent work experience required.

  • Experience with victims of domestic violence or individuals with significant trauma histories or other special needs populations preferred.

  • Able to communicate appropriately and work with a diverse group of individuals.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule as needed.

  • Demonstrated critical thinking, crisis intervention, problem solving and communication skills.

  • Dedication to excellent customer service, a commitment to treating clients with dignity & respect.

  • Ability to work as part of a team.

  • Experience in providing direct services in some segment of the human services field.
