Qualifications

A Sewer Inspector (CCTV) performs specialized and technical work in the operation of a TV truck and associated equipment and supervises a crew of Equipment Operators and/or Laborers. An employee in this class determines the condition of sewer pipes and the location of stoppages and/or breaks in the pipes. An employee in this class also performs routine and preventive maintenance on the closed-circuit TV camera and other electronic equipment. Incumbent can work as an Operator or Laborer on the Storm or Sanitary Crew. Work is performed independently in accordance with well established guidelines and standards. The employee handles routine and difficult situations and only refers emergency problems to the supervisor. Work is reviewed for accuracy through results achieved. Illustrative Examples of Work:

  • Supervises Equipment Operators and/or Laborers who assist with TV inspections;
  • Operates a TV unit from a van, inserts a TV camera into sewer pipes, and pulls camera along a cable in order to view extended areas of sewer pipe;
  • Monitors TV screen in determining the condition of the sewer pipe;
  • Supervises the operation of and is responsible for the general maintenance and minor repair of the TV truck;
  • Records the inside of the sewer pipe on videotape for later viewing by supervisor when necessary;
  • Locates and marks sewer lines in the field prior to excavation by utility companies, contractors, or City crews;
  • Assists in the repair of broken sewer pipes or the unstopping of laterals;
  • Maintains a videotape library of sewer inspections for reference purposes;
  • Investigates citizens' complaints relating to sewer problems;
  • Maintains records of sewer inspections;
  • Prepares diagrams of sanitary sewer/man hole locations;
  • Updates the sewer GIS map;
  • Performs routine and preventive maintenance on electronic equipment;
  • Assures the safety of employees, pedestrians, citizens' homes and property, and passing vehicles through the exercise of safe work practices;
  • Provides training to Laborers and/or Equipment Operators;
  • Supervises a crew in removing snow and ice from City streets and sidewalks and spreading sand and/or salt;
  • Performs related work as required.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Demonstrated ability to work in an operational environment where emergency response is a key component; and
  • A proven track record of successfully working within a team, superior customer interactions, and have effective communication skills.

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Good knowledge of the techniques used in the TV inspection of sewer lines;
  • Good knowledge of electronics to perform routine repair and preventive maintenance to electronic equipment;
  • Good knowledge of the use and care of all equipment necessary for TV inspections;
  • Good knowledge of sewers and related problems;
  • Skill in the operation of a variety of TV equipment;
  • Ability to read sewer plans and maps in order to locate sewer lines in the field;
  • Ability to make appropriate recommendations after making TV inspections;
  • Ability to assign, supervise, and evaluate the work of others;
  • Ability to train and motivate Laborers and Equipment Operators in the performance of their tasks in a safe and efficient manner;
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.

Minimum and Additional Requirements:

Minimum:

  • High School Diploma or GED;
  • Completion of technical school-level courses in electronics.
  • Ability to read sewer plans and maps;
  • Three years of experience in sewer construction and/or maintenance, including one year of experience in the operation and routine repair of TV inspection equipment; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license issued by state of residence.

Preferred:

  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL),
  • NASSCO Certified.

Hours: This is a full-time position, Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This is considered an essential position with varying shifts to include holidays, nights, weekends, and reporting during inclement weather.

Salary or Salary & Benefits: $51,424 - $69,423, depending on qualifications.
