Job summary

IMA Automation USA Inc in Elgin, IL is seeking a Field Service Engineer to join our service team. You will travel domestically and internationally to install, service, and retrofit automation lines at customer sites across North America.

The role requires hands-on machine building, reading engineering drawings, and providing customer training. You will work with engineering to solve problems, perform FAT/SAT, and ensure safety and quality on site.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, mechatronics or related field.
  • Strong communication, organizational, leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Hands-on engineering background with machine building experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
  • Experience with inspection and measuring tools (scales, calipers, micrometers, multimeters, dB meters).

Responsibilities

  • Perform machine construction and shipping activities in-house and/or at customer facilities.
  • Service and troubleshoot mechanical assemblies, identifying, analyzing and repairing product failures.
  • Order and replace parts.
  • Perform retrofits and upgrades at customer site.
  • Respond to service calls promptly.
  • Experience with on-site building and upgrades.
  • Assemble components and sub-assemblies according to engineering drawings.
  • Design, fabricate and modify parts as required.
  • Perform set-up and alignment of the system and subassemblies.
  • Perform machine debug activities.
  • Perform final debug, FAT, SAT, disassemble and reassemble automation lines.
  • Develop professional relationships with customers.
  • Provide equipment training to customers.
  • Assist engineering team with design problems and suggest improvements.
  • Detect unusual conditions, defective material, and operating difficulties.
  • Determine and recommend products and services best fit the customer's needs.
  • Represent IMA Automation in a professional manner.
  • Adhere to all IMA and customer safety regulations.
  • Ability to travel 50-75% of the time.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Required Competencies/Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in, Mechanical, or Mechatronics Engineering, or related field (combination of education and experience).
  • Strong communication, organizational, leadership, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to effectively handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Technical background with hands-on experience in machine building.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
  • Strong knowledge of inspection and measuring tools such as scales, calipers, micrometers, multi-meters, dB meters, etc.
Preferred Competencies/Skills
  • Experience with Automation machines.
  • Working knowledge of 24v sensors.
  • Working knowledge of pneumatics.
  • Electrical knowledge a plus.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft products.
  • Familiarity with Lean/Six Sigma or continuous improvement methodologies.
Working Conditions
  • Work will be performed mainly at customer sites which will require travel to other locations and work in different environments.
  • May involve extended hours during peak periods or special projects.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit, stand, and work on a computer for extended periods.
  • Light lifting (up to 50 lbs.) may occasionally be required.
  • Be able to travel or work off shifts to accommodate company or customer requirements; both domestically and internationally.
