Job summary

City of Manchester is seeking a senior IT Server Administrator to plan and support server and storage systems across city departments. You will install and configure server OS, manage virtualization, SANs, and SQL servers, and help establish disaster recovery and security standards.

You will also develop policies, maintain backups, and ensure high availability of critical applications while mentoring staff and coordinating across departments.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science.
  • Six or more years of experience in server operating systems and virtualization technology, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Windows server systems, including procurement, installation, maintenance, and administration.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of virtualization software, including deployment, maintenance, and administration.
  • Thorough knowledge of storage area networks and diagnostic programs for server operating systems.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and provide technical support for server and storage systems across City departments.
  • Evaluate, select, install, and configure server operating systems and related equipment.
  • Design, implement, monitor, and manage virtualization, shared storage infrastructure, and SQL servers.
  • Develop standards, procedures, and policies for server operating systems, storage, hardware, security, and disaster recovery.
  • Install, configure, and maintain storage area networks and server operating systems.
  • Install, monitor, and maintain highly available servers and applications.
  • Review and approve operating system and application service packs and security updates.
  • Design and maintain backup, disaster recovery, cybersecurity, cloud, and end-user environment solutions.
  • Create batch administration scripts and run system backups.
  • Standardize, build, and deploy workstations and transition users to new devices.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve server operating system and hardware problems.
  • Review application deployments to ensure server performance targets are met.
  • Develop technical specifications for proposals and bids and assist with evaluations.
  • Provide technical and operational training, support, and documentation.
  • Evaluate operational trends, make projections, and formulate plans for server and storage environments.
  • Serve as subject matter expert for server, storage, and virtualization areas.
  • Guide and demonstrate procedures to new employees in similar positions.
  • Keep supervisors informed of work progress, issues, and potential solutions.
  • Attend meetings and training to stay current on relevant practices and developments.
  • Respond to citizen inquiries and coordinate with others to improve interdepartmental efficiency.
  • Perform additional duties as required
