Job summary

The New York City Department of Homeless Services (DHS) is seeking Supervising Special Officers I to serve as Sergeants within the DHS Police Department (DHSPD). You will supervise staff, coordinate posts, conduct inspections, and maintain safety across DHS facilities.

Candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent, one year of relevant law enforcement or security experience, and be designated Peace Officers under NYS law with active certification.

Qualifications

• Requires four-year high school diploma or equivalent.
• One year of full-time experience in law enforcement, protection or security.
• Must be designated as a Peace Officer under NYS law and maintain certification.

Responsibilities

• Supervise, coordinate, and direct activities of subordinate staff and maintain discipline.
• Assign posts, inspect patrol staff and equipment, maintain location logbooks, and advise management.
• Instruct and confer with officers on duties and safety procedures.
• Prepare work schedules, evaluate performance, and provide mentorship.
• Oversee records, reports, and handling of incidents; assist in investigations as needed.
• Conduct facility and grounds patrols; collaborate with operations and law enforcement agencies.
• Promote health and safety standards across locations; liaise with staff and agencies.
