Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Corrections is seeking a Housing Unit Supervisor to oversee security personnel within the unit and ensure safety, sanitation, and proper appearance under the housing lieutenant.

The role requires completion of eight weeks of SCDC Basic Training on hire, certification by the SCDC Training Academy within six months, and meeting minimum education requirements (high school diploma; a related degree may substitute).

Qualifications

• High school diploma and relevant experience; a bachelor's degree may substitute.
• A degree in criminal justice or a related field may substitute for half of the required experience.
• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and complete the basic supervisory course within six months of entry into the position.

Responsibilities

• Under the supervision of the housing lieutenant, supervises the job performance and appearance of security personnel assigned to the unit.
• Assists with preparation of evaluations, requests for disciplinary action, counseling, and training of officers assigned to the unit.
• Conducts briefings for all unit officers.
• Makes routine inspections of the unit to ensure officers are properly performing their duties, and that safety, sanitation and security standards are maintained.
• Conducts investigations of alleged misconduct on part of inmates and employees assigned to the unit.
• Assists in conducting all formal and informal counts.
• Informs housing lieutenant of all incidents as they occur.
• Writes reports and reviews reports written by subordinate officers for accuracy, content, etc.
• Performs the duties of the housing lieutenant in his/her absence.
• Assumes responsibility for the housing unit during his/her tour of duty.

This position will be assigned to the Contraband Office.

Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:

A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor's degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.

SCDC Minimum Requirements:

• A high school diploma and eighteen (18) months experience in correctional, security, military, or police work.

• A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for half of the required experience.

• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
