Job summary

Qualifications

• Must have a high school diploma; a related bachelor’s degree may substitute for experience.
• Minimum 18 months experience in correctional, security, military, or police work; a related degree may substitute for half of the required experience.
• Must be certified by the SCDC training academy and complete the basic supervisory course within six months of entry.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and direct officers in a discipline program.
• Oversee the supervision, custody and control of inmates in housing units.
• Make routine inspections of living areas for security, safety, and sanitation compliance.
• Conduct investigations of misconduct by inmates and security personnel.
• Assist in counting procedures, both formal and informal.
• Supervise job performance, conduct and appearance of security staff.
• Counsel, recommend disciplinary action, train staff, and prepare reports as needed.
• Perform Lieutenant duties when necessary.

Job Responsibilities

• Under general supervision of the Shift Lieutenant, assist in instructing and directing officers in a program of discipline.
• Is responsible for the overall supervision of subordinate security assigned to the housing unit and for the supervision, custody and control of all inmates assigned to the housing units.
• Make routine inspections of the living areas for compliance with security, safety, and sanitation standards.
• Conduct investigations of alleged misconduct on the part of inmates and security personnel assigned.
• Assist in conducting formal and informal counts.
• Supervise job performance, conduct and appearance of security personnel.
• Counsel, recommend disciplinary action, train subordinate staff, and prepare reports as needed.
• Perform duties of Lieutenant when necessary.

Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:

• A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.

SCDC Minimum Requirements

• A high school diploma and eighteen (18) months experience in correctional, security, military, or police work.
• A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for 1/2 of required experience.
• Must be certified by the SCDC training academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
