Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Corrections seeks a security supervisor to plan, coordinate, and direct the actions of the security staff in a minimum‑security facility. You will oversee security, custody, and control of inmates and ensure the safety of buildings and public property.

Responsibilities include routine unit checks, assisting with inmate counts, investigating complaints and disputes, and acting as Shift Captain in the supervisor's absence.

Qualifications

• A high school diploma and relevant experience.
• A bachelor's degree may substitute for required experience.
• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and complete the basic supervisory course within six months of entry into the position.

• Makes routine checks of the unit(s) to ensure subordinate staff are performing their duties properly and safely, and that cleanliness and OSHA standards are maintained.
• Assists with all inmates counts for accuracy.
• Investigates complaints and violations; arbitrates disputes among inmate population and correctional staff.
• Acts as Shift Captain in his/her absence.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:

A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor's degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.

SCDC Minimum Requirements

• A high school diploma and three (3) years’ experience in correctional, security, military, or police work to include one (1) year of supervisory experience.
• A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for supervisory experience year for year (associate and above = 1 year).
• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
