Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Corrections is seeking a supervisor to oversee security personnel assigned to housing units and manage inmate custody and control. The role includes inspections, investigations, and staff coaching to meet performance standards.

You may be required to conduct counts and prepare reports, and temporarily perform Shift Lieutenant duties. The position is assigned to Contraband and requires completion of SCDC Basic Training within eight weeks of hire.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Experience in correctional, security, military, or police work (18 months).
• Bachelor’s degree may substitute for part of the experience.
• Must be certified by the SCDC training academy and complete the basic supervisory course within six months.

Responsibilities

• Conduct investigations of alleged misconduct by inmates and security personnel in area of responsibility.

• Prepare reports as needed or required.
• Perform duties of Shift Lieutenant when necessary.
• This position will be assigned to Contraband.

Job Responsibilities

• Makes routine inspections of the living areas for compliance with security, safety, and sanitation standards.
• Conducts investigations of alleged misconduct on the part of inmates and security personnel assigned to the area of responsibility.
• Assists in conducting formal and informal counts.
• Supervises the job performance, conduct, and appearance of assigned security personnel and prepares employee evaluations.
• Counsels, recommends disciplinary action, and trains subordinate staff to required standards of performance.
• Prepares reports as needed or required.
• Performs duties of Shift Lieutenant when necessary.
• This position will be assigned to Contraband.

Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements

A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.

SCDC Minimum Requirements

• A high school diploma and eighteen (18) months experience in correctional, security, military, or police work.
• A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for half of the required experience.
• Must be certified by the SCDC training academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
