Job summary

The State of South Carolina seeks a Security Supervisor for the housing unit within the Contraband Office. You will supervise officers, assist in evaluations and disciplinary actions, and conduct unit briefings to ensure safety and security standards are upheld.

You will perform inspections, investigations, and counts, and prepare reports. You may stand in for the housing lieutenant during absences, ensuring smooth unit operations during your shift.

Qualifications

• High school diploma required.
• Experience in correctional, security, military, or police work is preferred.
• A bachelor’s degree may substitute for part of the required experience.
• Certification by the SCDC Training Academy and completion of the basic supervisory course within six months of entry are required.

Responsibilities

• Supervise security personnel and oversee performance and appearance.
• Assist with evaluations, disciplinary actions, counseling, and training of officers.
• Conduct briefings for unit officers and perform routine inspections to ensure safety and standards.
• Investigate alleged misconduct by inmates or employees and participate in counts.
• Write and review reports, and act in the housing lieutenant's absence.
• Ensure unit operations during tour shifts and inform supervisor of incidents.

Job description

• Under the supervision of the housing lieutenant, the incumbent supervises the job performance and appearance of security personnel assigned to the unit.
• Assists with preparation of evaluations, requests for disciplinary action, counseling, and training of officers assigned to the unit.
• Conducts briefings for all unit officers.
• Makes routine inspections of the unit to ensure officers are properly performing their duties, and that safety, sanitation and security standards are maintained.
• Conducts investigations of alleged misconduct on part of inmates and employees assigned to the unit.
• Assists in conducting all formal and informal counts.
• Informs housing lieutenant of all incidents as they occur.
• Writes reports and reviews reports written by subordinate officers for accuracy, content, etc.
• Performs the duties of the housing lieutenant in his/her absence.
• Assumes responsibility for the housing unit during his/her tour of duty.

This position will be assigned to the Contraband Office.Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements

A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor's degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.

SCDC Minimum Requirements

• A high school diploma and eighteen (18) months experience in correctional, security, military, or police work.
• A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for half of the required experience.
• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
