Job summary

Town of Fairfield seeks a skilled Water Pollution Control Facility Operator to operate and maintain the WPCF and pump stations, monitor gauges and control panels, collect samples, perform routine laboratory tests, and ensure safe, compliant wastewater treatment for the community.

The role requires a High School diploma or GED, a CT Class III Wastewater Operator’s Certificate, working knowledge of SCADA, a valid Connecticut Driver’s License with HAZMAT and Tanker endorsements, willingness to

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• Four years of experience operating a modern WPCF with activated sludge and related pump equipment.
• CT DEEP Class III Wastewater Operator’s Certificate required.
• Knowledge of CT DEEP SCADA and mechanical maintenance.
• Overtime may be required for emergencies including evenings, weekends and holidays.
• Valid Connecticut Driver’s License and Class B CDL with HAZMAT and Tanker endorsements; travel may be required.
• Scheduled Monday–Friday, 7:00 am–3:30 pm; UPSEU Local #454 affiliation.

Responsibilities

• Extract samples for routine lab tests and analyses.
• Maintain preventive maintenance and operating records.
• Maintain shift log and meter readings.
• Monitor gauges, meters, and control panels to determine processing needs.
• Operate trucks, pumps, and equipment to complete tasks.
• Operate and maintain emergency power generators.
• Operate sludge processing equipment as required.
• Locate, uncover, clean, and flush sewer manholes and pipes; enter manholes as needed.
• Operate sewer cleaning equipment and valves to control flows.
• Operate wastewater treatment and sludge disposal equipment to manage flows.
• Perform plumbing, pipe fitting, welding and minor electrical work.
• Perform routine maintenance on buildings, pump stations, and grounds.
