Job summary

The Town of Milford is seeking a skilled Wastewater Treatment Operator to join the Water Utilities Department. The role involves operating and maintaining wastewater treatment plant processes, pump stations, and collection systems in a municipal setting.

Qualifications include a high school diploma (or equivalent), two years of related experience, and NH Grade II Certification (or ability to obtain within one year).

  • NH Grade II Certification or ability to obtain within one year of employment.
  • Ability to operate hand and power tools, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Physically capable of lifting, carrying, climbing, and working in confined spaces.
  • Willingness to work nights, weekends, holidays, and rotating on-call shifts.

Responsibilities

  • Operate, monitor, and maintain plant processes, pump stations, and collection systems.
  • Start up and shut down wastewater treatment equipment as required.
  • Monitor gauges, SCADA, and logs; record accurate operational data.
  • Collect samples and perform laboratory analyses per procedures.
  • Operate biosolids dewatering equipment (centrifuges, belt presses).
  • Perform routine maintenance and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation systems.
  • Calibrate and repair monitoring equipment such as flow meters.
  • Identify/report safety hazards, equipment malfunctions, and emergencies.
  • Maintain facility drawings and schematics; perform general facilities maintenance.
  • Assist training of lesser-skilled operators; participate in committees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job description

The Town of Milford is seeking a skilled and motivated Wastewater Treatment Operator to join our Water Utilities Department. This role performs a variety of semi‑skilled and skilled duties related to the operation, maintenance, and repair of the Town’s wastewater treatment facilities and collection systems. This is an excellent opportunity to work in a technically challenging, service‑oriented, and collaborative municipal environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate, monitor, and maintain wastewater treatment plant processes, pump stations, and collection systems
  • Start up and shut down wastewater treatment equipment as required
  • Monitor equipment, gauges, charts, and SCADA systems; record and maintain accurate operational logs
  • Collect samples and perform laboratory analyses in accordance with established procedures
  • Operate biosolids dewatering equipment, including centrifuges and belt filter presses
  • Perform routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation systems
  • Calibrate and repair monitoring and control equipment such as flow meters and recorders
  • Identify, report, and respond to safety hazards, equipment malfunctions, and emergency situations
  • Maintain facility drawings and schematics
  • Perform general facility, grounds, and custodial maintenance
  • Assist with training lesser‑skilled operators
  • Participate in committees and perform other duties as assigned
Skills & Abilities
  • Working knowledge of wastewater treatment processes and equipment
  • Ability to understand basic physical, chemical, and biological wastewater treatment principles
  • Strong attention to detail with accurate data recording and reporting skills

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and exercise sound judgment

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two (2) years of experience in wastewater treatment plant or collection system operations
    (or an equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • NH Grade II Wastewater Treatment Certification or ability to obtain within one (1) year of employment
  • Ability to operate a variety of hand and power tools, vehicles, and equipment
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, including lifting, carrying, climbing, and working in confined spaces
  • Availability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and rotating on‑call shifts
Working Conditions
  • Work is split approximately 50% indoors / 50% outdoors
  • Exposure to weather conditions, raw sewage, chemicals, confined spaces, elevated noise levels, and other occupational hazards
  • Use of protective equipment and adherence to safety protocols is required
