Job description

GitLab is an open core software company that develops the most comprehensive AI-powered DevSecOps Platform, used by more than 100,000 organizations. Our mission is to enable everyone to contribute to and co-create the software that powers our world. When everyone can contribute, consumers become contributors, significantly accelerating the rate of human progress. This mission is integral to our culture, influencing how we hire, build products, and lead our industry. We make this possible at GitLab by running our operations on our product and staying aligned with our values. Learn more about Life at GitLab.

As a Senior UX Researcher for Security and Compliance at GitLab, you’ll shape key product features by understanding user needs and validating solutions. This is a mature product area where research is highly valued, so you can focus on impactful work from day one.

In our all-remote environment, you'll work closely with a global UX research team and collaborate with Product Designers, PMs, and Engineering leaders. Your insights will directly influence decisions that affect millions of users.

You'll have the autonomy to balance stakeholder needs with ambitious research goals. From validating user needs to testing solutions and contributing to broader research efforts, this role gives you both impact and flexibility—supported by our async culture that prioritizes outcomes over hours.

What you’ll do

  • Become an expert on the users within your allocated area of coverage: know how they use GitLab, their pain points, their workflows, etc.
  • Collaborate with Designers, Product Managers and Engineers on research projects.
  • Conduct all stages of UX Research: identifying, planning, driving, conducting, analysing and reporting.
  • Use a variety of qual and quant research methods to apply to research questions.
  • Be an advocate for research with your stakeholders, guiding them on best practice and enabling them to conduct their own research where required.

What you’ll bring

  • Deep experience running mixed-methods research.
  • Strong stakeholder management experience - get buy-in from your stakeholders on the work you're doing, balancing short term work with long-term, strategic projects.
  • Experience working in a highly iterative, fast-paced environment. Have the ability to pivot with sudden changes in direction.
  • Must have experience working on a developer tooling product, or partnering directly with developers.
  • Self-motivated and self-managing.
  • Experience with workflows and tooling used by engineering, design and product teams.

About the team

The UXR team currently has 10 team members, spread across the globe. You’ll be part of the overall UX team, made up of UXR, Technical Writing and Product Design. The goal of UX research at GitLab is to connect with GitLab users all around the world and gather insight into their behaviors, motivations, and goals. We use these insights to inform and strengthen product and design decisions.

How GitLab will support you

Please note that we welcome interest from candidates with varying levels of experience; many successful candidates do not meet every single requirement. Additionally, studies have shown that people from underrepresented groups are less likely to apply to a job unless they meet every single qualification. If you're excited about this role, please apply and allow our recruiters to assess your application.
