Job summary

MBTA is seeking a Lead UX Designer to deliver UX design and research on complex, ambiguous problems affecting rider journeys and operations. You will drive problem definition through shipped outcomes and work with cross-functional teams to ensure coherent experiences.

The role requires leading UX research, shaping product direction, and championing accessible, end-to-end experiences while aligning with agency priorities and constraints.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
• 6+ years in UX design, product design, or interaction design with complex digital products.
• Experience conducting or leading UX research and applying findings to decisions.
• Design end-to-end experiences across multiple touchpoints or systems.
• Knowledge of accessibility standards and inclusive design.
• Experience working on cross-functional teams with PM, engineering, and stakeholders.
• Demonstrated design leadership, mentoring, or influencing product decisions.
• As part of selection, may complete a UX case study or whiteboarding exercise.

Responsibilities

• Lead UX work on complex problems across journeys or contexts.
• Define UX research scope and surface knowledge gaps for teams.
• Shape product direction by advocating for riders and staff.
• Design information architectures, patterns, and interactions.
• Ensure inclusive and accessible end-to-end experiences.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to align teams around user-centered approaches.
• Share expertise via reviews, critique, and pairing, fostering collaboration.
• Follow MBTA design practices and protect data security and privacy.
