Harper, an AI-native commercial insurance company in San Francisco, seeks a senior commercial underwriter who thinks in systems to encode judgment into appetite rules, routing logic, and submission standards for an AI-driven process.

On-site in San Francisco, you will collaborate with engineering and product to turn underwriting expertise into scalable workflows, definitions of market-ready submissions, and routing decisions across carriers and markets.

Qualifications

• 4+ years of commercial underwriting with specialty/E&S exposure.
• Experience at an MGA, MGU, wholesaler, or similar handling messy risks and imperfect submissions.
• Breadth across multiple commercial lines or risk categories.
• Tech-savvy and product-curious; able to explain underwriting logic to engineers.

Responsibilities

• Review live submissions and system outputs to catch missing context and incomplete exposure analysis.
• Encode judgment into product workflows, appetite rules, and routing logic with engineering and product teams.
• Define what constitutes a market-ready submission across common commercial lines and specialty risks.
• Build appetite and routing logic across carriers, wholesalers, MGAs, and specialty markets.
• Advise across intake, sales, placements, engineering, and leadership on workflow improvements.
• Write playbooks for recurring risk categories to clarify underwriting approaches.
• Think like both underwriter and broker to position risk for market acceptance.
