Job summary

AeroVironment, Inc. is looking for a Sr. Electrical Engineer to design, develop, and maintain electrical control systems for small unmanned aircraft. You will focus on safety, reliability, and sustainability while selecting components from specifications and analyses.

In this role, you will collaborate with avionics, embedded systems and RF teams, lead a small project, and guide designers through flight-test activities. A strong background in HDL, C/C++, and power electronics is required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related is required or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Minimum of 5 – 8 years of relevant experience.
• Proficient with office software, computer-based productivity tools and other software tools in one's area of expertise.
• Experienced using Altium Designer for schematic capture and PCB layout.
• Experienced in one or more areas: Radio Frequency (RF), embedded control, FPGA.
• Experienced with power electronics, including motors and Battery Technology (lead acid, Nickel metal hybrid & Lithium ion).
• Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex systems.
• Demonstrated familiarity of common industry protocols (LVDS, I2C, HDMI, UART, SPI, CAN, USB).
• Knowledge of Engineering fundamentals, mathematics, physics & material properties.
• Some travel may be required in support of flight test operations (up to 30%).
• Must have a clean driving record.

Responsibilities

• Operates computer-assisted engineering and design software and equipment to perform engineering tasks.
• Performs electronic engineering support activities on R&D projects.
• Coordinates manufacturing, construction, installation, maintenance, support, documentation and testing activities to ensure compliance with specifications, codes and design requirements.
• Inspects completed installations and observes operations to ensure conformance to design and equipment specifications and compliance with operational & safety standards.
• Works with avionics, embedded systems and Radio Frequency (RF) links.
• Supports Flight Test operations, as needed.
• Troubleshoots complex systems.
• Documents designs with engineering drawings and written descriptions.
• Performs design and analysis tasks under general supervision and may be involved in developing budgets, estimating labor, material and construction costs.
• Demonstrates familiarity with Small UAV subsystems and associated software a plus.
