Senior Tooling Engineer - DFM & NPI Leader

Job summary

Spectrum Plastics Group in Minneapolis seeks an experienced Tooling Engineer to bridge between tooling suppliers and Spectrum MN for mold design, build, qualification and release to production. You will lead DFM reviews, manage tooling cost and delivery, and drive supplier performance with strong communication to customers and internal teams.

The role requires extensive injection molding tooling experience, CAD and Moldflow proficiency, and a track record in regulated manufacturing environments.

Qualifications

• 7-10 years of tool design experience.
• 3-5 years tool building experience.
• Strong knowledge of injection mold design, DFM, and plastic part design.
• Proficient reading of engineering drawings with GD&T.
• SolidWorks CAD experience preferred.
• Experience using Moldflow or similar simulation software.
• Experience with engineering-grade thermoplastics (e.g., PEEK, PEI, PSU) and GF/CF materials.
• Clear communication of technical recommendations to customers, suppliers, and teams.
• Experience in medical device or other highly regulated manufacturing environments preferred.
• Excellent organizational and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Manage tool procurement from design through construction with suppliers.
• Lead DFM reviews to optimize part designs for manufacturability and tooling robustness.
• Review CAD models to identify tooling and manufacturability risks and discuss modifications.
• Manage mold build/rework schedules to meet on-time delivery.
• Support quote generation and customer discussions on tooling recommendations.
• Develop and enforce common tool design standards across Spectrum MN sites.
• Establish continuous improvement metrics for tooling suppliers.
