Job summary

Corning Incorporated seeks a Research Scientist, Electron Microscopy to support its characterization team. You will perform TEM/STEM characterization, prepare TEM specimens with FIB, and conduct EPMA analysis across glasses, ceramics, semiconductors, polymers, and more.

You will collaborate with researchers, develop methods, present results to project teams, and contribute to reports and IP. Requires MS or PhD and 2+ years hands-on TEM/STEM experience; travel up to 20%.

Qualifications

  • MS or PhD in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, or a related field.
  • 2+ years hands-on experience in a characterization-focused role, with strong TEM/STEM and FIB experience.
  • Experience with EPMA, or demonstrated ability and interest in developing capability in EPMA and related microanalysis techniques.
  • Strong foundation in materials science and technical problem-solving for complex inorganic or multiphase material systems.
  • Ability to analyze complex data, draw sound technical conclusions, and communicate results effectively.
  • Strong organizational, collaboration, and time-management skills in a dynamic research environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced TEM/STEM characterization with analytical capabilities (EDS, EELS).
  • Prepare high-quality TEM specimens using FIB.
  • Conduct EPMA analysis for compositional characterization and data interpretation.
  • Collaborate with researchers to design experiments, collect and analyze data, and communicate findings to teams.
  • Contribute to project planning by identifying effective characterization strategies.
  • Develop and improve microscopy methods, sample prep workflows, and protocols for TEM and EPMA.
  • Present technical results clearly to internal customers and project teams.
  • Maintain safe laboratory practices and support instrument maintenance.
  • Contribute to technical reports and IP activities as appropriate.
