A leading company is seeking a Senior Payroll Tax Specialist for a remote contract role. The position involves supporting tax filing operations, resolving complex tax issues, and ensuring compliance. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in payroll tax and client service, with proficiency in tax software and Excel. This role offers flexibility and opportunities for mentorship and process improvement.
This senior-level contract role supports high-visibility tax filing operations and agency notice resolution. You'll serve as a subject matter expert in payroll tax compliance, coordinating across clients, service teams, and tax suppliers. Your ability to research, resolve, and communicate complex tax issues will drive improvements, prevent recurrence, and enhance client satisfaction in a fast-paced shared services environment.
Key Responsibilities
• Research and resolve payroll tax notices, including penalty and interest (P&I) calculations and abatement letter requests
• Educate clients and internal teams on payroll tax filing and regulatory compliance
• Monitor and analyze tax operations metrics, escalate delivery issues as needed
• Lead variance analysis and coordinate escalations with tax suppliers
• Approve checklist workflows and review tax filing queue items
• Support testing of interface updates and tax filing automation
• Mentor peers and ensure best practices are followed across tax resolution activities
• Collaborate with client teams to support onboarding and issue resolution
Minimum Qualifications
• High school diploma or equivalent
• 3+ years of experience in payroll tax filing and agency interaction
• 2+ years using tax filing software (e.g., MasterTax, ADP SmartCompliance)
• 2+ years of direct client service or support experience
• Excel proficiency including pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, and basic macro skills

• MasterTax (preferred)
• ADP SmartCompliance (desired)
• Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, macros)
• Internal workflow/ticketing systems
• Secure file and data exchange platforms
Preferred Skills
• Experience managing third-party tax filing suppliers
• Background in payroll operations or shared services
• Strong documentation and process improvement skills

• $30–$32 per hour• Full-time hours• Contract role• W2
