Job summary

The City of Virginia Beach is seeking a highly skilled System Engineer to design, implement, secure, and maintain the city’s enterprise infrastructure. This role ensures reliability, performance, and scalability of systems supporting municipal operations and public-service delivery.

The ideal candidate will work with IT teams, vendors, and city departments to support infrastructure modernization, cloud adoption, and long‑term technology planning, while maintaining secure, resilient systems.

Qualifications

• US citizenship required.
• Bachelor's degree or 6+ years of relevant experience.
• 3–5+ years in system engineering, infrastructure administration, or enterprise IT.
• Proficiency with Windows and/or Linux server environments, virtualization, and monitoring tools.
• Experience with cloud platforms (Azure, AWS) and hybrid infrastructure.
• Strong networking, security, and systems integration knowledge.
• Ability to troubleshoot complex issues and communicate with diverse stakeholders.
• Background and drug screening check.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, maintain enterprise systems, servers, storage, and virtualization environments.
• Manage system performance, capacity planning, and lifecycle management to ensure high availability.
• Configure and support Windows/Linux servers, cloud services, and hybrid infrastructure components.
• Maintain system monitoring, alerting, and performance-optimization tools.
• Implement and maintain security controls, patching, and hardening standards.
• Support disaster recovery planning, backup strategies, and business continuity operations.
• Ensure systems comply with municipal, state, and federal security and data-protection requirements.
• Conduct vulnerability remediation and collaborate with cybersecurity teams on risk mitigation.
• Integrate enterprise systems with applications, databases, and cloud platforms.
• Troubleshoot complex system issues and coordinate resolution with internal teams and vendors.
• Support automation initiatives, scripting, and configuration management to improve operational efficiency.
• Provide Tier III technical support for escalated infrastructure issues.
• Participate in planning and execution of infrastructure modernization, cloud migration, and digital transformation initiatives.
• Work with city departments to understand operational needs and translate them into technical solutions.
• Prepare technical documentation, diagrams, and standard operating procedures.
• Contribute to technology roadmaps and long-term infrastructure strategy.
