Job summary

DC Government's Department of Forensic Sciences, Public Health Laboratory, seeks a Supervisory Clinical Laboratory Scientist to lead the Microbiology Unit and oversee highly complex analyses with a focus on accuracy, quality control, and regulatory compliance.

The role includes coordinating specimen processing, implementing new testing methods, and ensuring staff are trained and compliant. Collaborative teamwork with the lab units and external proficiency programs is essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or graduate/higher level degree in biological sciences, chemistry and mathematics and successful completion of NAACLS-accredited MLS/CLS program or equivalent.
• Full 4-year course of study including 12 months in a medical technology program or an approved 1-year certificate program.
• Five years of full-time clinical laboratory experience in Blood Banking, Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Immunology and Urinalysis/Body Fluids with appropriate credentialing.

Responsibilities

• Oversees and participates in planning and administration of unit activities; coordinates complex analyses and ensures high-quality results.
• Manages specimen processing, data accuracy, and timely reporting; monitors quality control and regulatory compliance (CLIA/CAP).
• Coordinates proficiency testing participation and updates SOPs; trains staff and ensures cross-training as needed.

Education

NAACLS-accredited MLS/CLS program

4-year medical technology program or certificate

5 years of clinical lab experience in Blood Banking, Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Immunology, Urinalysis
