Job summary

HDR is seeking a Substation Structural Engineer to join our Power Delivery Team in North Carolina. This role focuses on structural design for high‑voltage substations, including foundations, steel framing, and detailing for fabrication.

The engineer will work in a collaborative, multi‑discipline environment across project lifecycles, from concept through commissioning, with travel as needed. Ideal candidates will have a PE license, 5+ years in HV substations, and proficiency with design tools

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering is required.
Professional Engineer (PE) license is required or recognized by the licensing board for the position location.
Minimum 5 years of technical design experience with HV switchyard and substation projects.
Experience with physical/outdoor design of high voltage substations is preferred.
Familiarity with industry standards: NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, ASCE-113 and others.
Proficiency with AutoCAD and structural design software (RISA, STAAD, etc.).
Strong written and verbal communication; ability to work independently and in teams.

Responsibilities

Lead, oversee, review, and execute structural engineering tasks for substation structures and foundations.
Coordinate with layout designs, drawings, and BOMs.
Prepare/review construction specifications and quality checks per HDR QMS.
Collaborate with cross-disciplinary engineers and mentor junior staff.
Contribute to technical papers or presentations for industry events.
Travel may be required.
