Job summary

ISG is seeking a Substation Project Manager to lead complex substation projects from concept through commissioning, coordinating multidisciplinary teams and managing scope, schedule, and budget for critical infrastructure programs.

Based in Birmingham, AL, the role supports FirstEnergy projects and requires strong leadership, communication and a commitment to safety and quality standards.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline is required.
• 12+ years of experience in substation engineering, design, or consulting environments are required.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred (state licensure or ability to obtain).
• Valid driver’s license with the ability to travel as needed.
• Proficiency with engineering design tools and CAD systems.
• Strong computer skills including Word, Excel, Outlook.
• Working knowledge of NEC and NESC codes and standards.
• Commitment to ongoing professional development in the field.
• Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with team, clients, and partners.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills.
• Team-oriented mindset and accountability.

Responsibilities

• Lead high-complexity substation projects, including scope, schedule, and budget oversight.
• Own the full project lifecycle from concept through commissioning.
• Serve as primary client contact and translate goals into actionable plans.
• Coordinate multidisciplinary teams across electrical, civil, and structural engineering.
• Contribute to proposals, fee development, and resource allocation.
• Implement QA/QC processes and review designs and calculations.
• Oversee protection & control and physical substation designs.
• Support field engineering, commissioning, and troubleshooting during construction.
• Mentor junior staff and represent ISG in industry events and client discussions.
• Ensure compliance with NEC, NESC, safety protocols, and client requirements.
