Job summary

WSP USA is seeking a Lead Substation Project Engineer to join our Power & Energy Substation Team in Boise, ID, with consideration for Billings, MT and Reno, NV. The role offering on‑site, hybrid, or remote work depends on location and business needs.

You will provide high‑level technical guidance on medium‑ to high‑voltage substations, lead multiple projects, and collaborate with clients and internal teams to meet quality and schedule goals.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).
• 7–10 years of post‑education experience delivering substation design for utility projects.
• Experience in mid‑ to high‑voltage substation design (15kV–230kV) with IEEE/ANSI standards.
• Led electrical engineers on multiple substations concurrently.
• Knowledge of protection & control, SCADA, communications, and telecom.
• Strong knowledge of electrical codes, standards, compliance, and documentation.
• Ability to perform complex engineering calculations and interpret plans/specs.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with attention to QA/QC.
• Self‑leadership, multi‑tasking, and prioritization in a dynamic environment.
• Ability to guide junior team members independently with QA/QC.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical, Inventor, or similar software.
• Proven commitment to safety policies and incident prevention.
• Flexibility to work schedules beyond a typical workweek and occasional travel.

Responsibilities

• Provide high‑level technical guidance for multi‑site, multi‑phase substations from concept through commissioning.
• Develop schedules, budgets, quality plans, and deliverables for assigned projects.
• Perform QA/QC reviews of technical deliverables before client submission.
• Mentor engineers and designers to support project execution.
• Prepare technical reports, calculations, exhibits, and presentations for clients and internal teams.
• Interact with clients, contractors, and regulators in a professional manner.
• Collaborate with teams on proposals, execution strategies, and business development.
• Stay current with evolving substation design practices, codes, and standards.
• Travel as needed to project sites and client meetings.
