Job summary

Burns & McDonnell in California seeks a Senior Substation Engineer to lead design deliverables for high-voltage substations from concept to commissioning, aligning engineering plans with budget and client needs.

You will develop design packages, perform sizing and studies, ensure compliance with IEEE/NESC, lead field inspections, manage schedules and budgets, and contribute to proposals. PE license preferred.

Qualifications

• ABET-accredited degree in electrical or mechanical engineering with 7+ years of substation experience (consulting preferred)
• Excellent written and verbal communication; strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and related tools
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
• Demonstrated leadership and collaborative teamwork

Responsibilities

• Lead substation projects from conceptual phase through completion
• Develop substation design packages including arrangement, protection, control, and electrical studies
• Lead development of design calculations (insulation, DC systems, grounding, etc.) and BOM
• Prepare design sketches, estimates, equipment specs, and deliverables
• Apply IEEE, NESC, and other industry standards in designs
• Perform field inspections of substation facilities
• Lead complex tasks and process improvements
• Manage project schedule and budget; ensure client satisfaction and QA/QC
• Lead proposals with schedule and budget estimates
