Job summary

Jacobs is seeking a Senior Substation Designer to deliver Protection & Control and Physical Design packages for electrical utility, industrial, and data center substations. You will work with engineers, project managers, clients, and contractors from concept through commissioning, mentoring junior designers and ensuring design quality.

The role requires extensive substation design experience (12 kV–500 kV), proficiency in AutoCAD/MicroStation, and strong NEC/NESC/IEEE knowledge.

Qualifications

• Associate degree in Engineering Technology or related discipline.
• Minimum 12 years of substation design experience.
• Experience in P&C and Physical Design for AIS and GIS substations.
• Experience supporting substations from 12 kV through 500 kV.
• Understanding of project execution from conceptual to commissioning.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD, MicroStation, or comparable design software.
• Strong understanding of substation equipment, grounding, lightning protection, raceway design, SCADA systems, relays and relay panels, breaker and fuse applications.
• Strong understanding of equipment clearances.
• Strong knowledge of NEC, NESC, IEEE standards and utility requirements.
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining quality and schedule commitments.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain complete P&C and physical design packages for substation projects.
• Prepare wiring diagrams, control panel layouts, relay panel arrangements, and SCADA wiring drawings.
• Develop cable schedules and routing plans.
• Size DC and AC distribution breakers and fuses.
• Create station one-line diagrams, equipment layouts, and elevations.
• Develop grounding plans, lightning protection, raceway layouts, and cable trench layouts.
• Coordinate equipment locations and field clearances.
• Review design standards, calculations, vendor drawings, and client requirements for consistency.
• Mentor junior designers and drafters; provide technical guidance.
