Job summary

Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) seeks an experienced engineer specializing in structural mechanics to join our EMI team in Newport Beach/San Diego, supporting projects across the United States and internationally. You will contribute to advanced analyses for nuclear, defense, and critical facilities, leveraging FEM tools to solve complex problems.

The role requires 8+ years in structural engineering, a strong background in dynamics and engineering mechanics, and PE/SE registration.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of professional experience in structural engineering or engineering mechanics
• Master of Science, Master of Engineering, or Ph.D. in Structural Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, or similar field.
• Education must emphasize structural analysis, dynamics, and/or engineering mechanics.
• Proficiency in probabilistic concepts and uncertainty quantification.
• Experience with finite element software (ANSYS/ABAQUS/SAP2000).
• PE or SE registration preferred.
• Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
• Willingness to travel for field inspections.

Responsibilities

• Perform engineering analyses of structures, systems, and components for extreme events (earthquakes, wind, explosions, impacts).
• Develop finite element models and run linear/nonlinear analyses.
• Conduct seismic soil-structure interaction analyses.
• Prepare calculations and reports documenting analyses.
• Review work of team members and assist in proposals and client communication.
