Job summary

Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) seeks an experienced Structural Engineer for its EMI team in Southern California. The candidate will apply advanced structural mechanics, probabilistic methods, and finite element analysis to challenging projects, including seismic and non-building structures, with opportunity for growth and international work.

The role requires 5+ years in structural engineering, an advanced degree, PE/SE registration, and strong programming in MATLAB/Python/VBA.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Structural Engineering or Engineering Mechanics.
  • 5+ years of professional experience in structural engineering or engineering mechanics.
  • Emphasis on structural analysis, structural dynamics, and engineering mechanics.
  • Strong background in structural analysis, structural dynamics, structural design, and engineering mechanics.
  • Knowledge of probabilistic concepts such as risk, reliability, uncertainty quantification, random vibrations, and/or stochastic processes.
  • Familiarity with ANSYS, ABAQUS, LS-DYNA, SAP2000.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) or Structural Engineer (SE) registration.
  • Strong written and verbal English communication.
  • Proficiency with MATLAB, Python, and/or VBA.
  • Ability to travel and perform field inspections.
  • May require security clearance check.
  • Valid driver’s license if applicable.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and perform engineering analyses of structures, systems, and components for extreme events and unconventional requirements.
  • Develop finite element models of structures and perform linear/nonlinear analyses.
  • Perform seismic soil-structure interaction analyses of building structures.
  • Prepare calculations and reports documenting analyses.
  • Review work by team members and supporting staff.
  • Assist in preparation of proposals, letters, reports, calculations, budgeting, scheduling, and client communication.
