Job summary

Newport News Shipbuilding in Virginia seeks an Engineer Structural 5 to analyze, research and develop structural engineering specifications for naval ship structures, including metals, composites, and interfaces with systems. The role includes damage tolerance, design allowables and modeling using CATIA, IDEAS and ProEngineer.

A Master’s in Civil/Structural/Mechanical or related field is preferred; ABET-accredited engineering degree required with 14 years of exempt experience.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree and 14 years of relevant exempt experience; Master's Degree and 12 years of relevant professional experience; Ph.D. and 9 years of experience.
• Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Responsibilities

• Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite materials for product design or operation of product to include structures and equipment.
• Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling.
• Models structural behavior using FE methods and various software.
• Interfacing with NAVSEA and Naval Nuclear Labs; coordinating with Naval Architecture and other disciplines.
