Job description

Salary range is $80k to $175k, with a midpoint of $125k. New hires typically receive between the minimum and midpoint; however, we may go slightly higher based on experience, internal equity, and market considerations.

GENERAL PURPOSE:

Performs advanced senior-level professional engineering duties, serving as the subject matter expert for all phases of Sound Transit projects, providing technical and strategic support, overseeing structural engineering analyses, and ensuring standards compliance.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The following are primary duties; incumbents may perform additional, position-specific duties:

  • Serve as the technical expert and point of contact for structural engineering questions from the public, contractors, and staff.
  • Develop and maintain technical requirements and criteria related to structural engineering, including design standards and specifications.
  • Support project managers during planning, design, and construction phases, including reviews and analysis.
  • Collaborate with safety and operations departments on structural evaluations, inspections, and load assessments.
  • Support departmental and agency activities, including serving on committees, preparing reports, and staying current with industry trends.
  • Promote Sound Transit’s core values and foster a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Follow safety rules and incorporate sustainability into daily practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, five years of structural engineering experience with heavy civil structures, preferably in transit, or an equivalent combination.

Licenses or Certifications:

  • Professional Engineer license (Washington)
  • Professional Structural Engineer license (Washington)

Knowledge and Skills: Operations and activities of engineering programs, complex structural principles, construction methods, contract management, current trends, relevant laws and regulations, office software, effective communication, project management, and detailed analysis/reporting skills.

Physical Demands / Work Environment:
  • Primarily office work; some field inspections required.
  • Fieldwork may involve exposure to machinery, weather, chemicals, and noise.
  • Must be able to perform physical activities related to inspections.
  • Agency prioritizes safety and provides training.
