Job summary

Symetra is seeking a Sr. Underwriting Consultant – Stop Loss to evaluate and price new and existing business while balancing profitability and growth.

You will analyze financial and medical risk, manage a complex block of business, and collaborate with Sales, Brokers, and internal partners to deliver strong outcomes. Responsibilities include underwriting, risk assessment, pricing, mana­ging high-visibility cases, and leading underwriting initiatives.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of Stop Loss risk-based underwriting experience.
• Strong knowledge of Stop Loss products, risk assessment, pricing methodologies, and underwriting principles.
• Proven analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
• Strong communication, relationship-building, and negotiation skills.
• Ability to travel periodically to meet business needs.

Responsibilities

• Underwrite new and renewal Stop Loss business by assessing financial, medical, and claims risk and determining pricing.
• Analyze employer group experience, claim history, and member-level medical information to evaluate risk and provide underwriting recommendations.
• Manage complex, high-visibility cases and guide guideline exceptions.
• Collaborate with Sales, Brokers, TPAs and internal teams to support pricing and market positioning.
• Lead or contribute to underwriting initiatives, cross-functional projects, and training efforts.
