Job summary

UPMC's Sterile Processing Department seeks a seasoned leader to oversee decontamination, sterile processing, assembly, packaging, sterilization, storage, and distribution of reusable surgical instrumentation.

The role coordinates daily operations, orients new staff, assumes charge in the director's absence, and partners with OR to ensure instrument availability and compliance with safety and quality standards.

Responsibilities

• Independently run the department on off-shifts and weekends or in the absence of the director.
• Conforms and adheres to department policies concerning decontamination, sterile processing, infection control and safety.
• Arranges in-service education programs.
• Performs other related duties as assigned by authorized personnel or as may be required to meet emergency situations.
• Demonstrates knowledge of performance improvement tools and techniques and improves quality of care and work environment.
• Prepares and assembles surgical tray and equipment following established tray listings for issue or processing.
• Maintains knowledge of decontamination/sterilization equipment and troubleshooting.
• Acts as liaison between SPD and OR.
• Evaluates staff schedule and re-assigns staff as needed.
• Participates on committees and task forces.
• Communicates effectively with internal and external customers; mentors and models positive communication.
• Develops relationships and coaching to promote teamwork and culture.
• Assesses supplies and maintains inventory; handles instrument tracking and case carts.
• Models team behaviors and supports ongoing development and leadership training.
• Monitors sterilizers; ensures proper function and availability for OR needs.
• Acts as a resource for staff and customers; ensures clean and decontaminated equipment.
• Demonstrates accountability for professional development and change initiatives.
• Assists with instrument tracking and streamlining of instrument sets for throughput.
• Mentors staff and participates in training and precepting students.
