Job summary

Gusto is hiring a Senior Staff Software Engineer for Expansion Experiences in San Francisco, with teams across Denver and New York. You will own the full expansion funnel, shape the technical foundation for recommendations and conversion journeys, and partner with Product, Design, and Data Science to drive strategic outcomes.

You’ll mentor engineers, push high‑quality code, and advocate for scalable, AI‑assisted development.

Qualifications

10+ years of software development experience, including full-stack, customer-facing products at scale.
Ability to partner with Product, Design, and Data Science to shape the roadmap.
Experience in growth, lifecycle, or conversion-focused contexts.
Demonstrated ability to move quickly and iterate with measurement.
Experience owning multi-quarter initiatives end to end.
Navigate ambiguity and influence peers without formal authority.
Experience with large-scale refactors, performance, and reliability work.
Mentoring engineers and helping teams scale their impact.
Experience leveraging AI tools to accelerate development.
Build well-structured, well-documented code.
Communicate effectively with engineering and business stakeholders.

Responsibilities

Own outcomes across the full expansion funnel and shape the underlying architecture.
Define the technical approach for recommendations and conversion journeys.
Make sharp scoping calls and ship simple versions, then iterate.
Design experiments and use data to decide what to scale or cut.
Partner with Product, Design, and Data Science to shape the roadmap.
Raise engineering bar with leadership, code reviews, and delegation as needed.
