Job summary

GEICO is seeking a Manager, Staff Counsel in Brooklyn, NY to oversee all Staff Counsel office activities defending GEICO insureds in liability, UM/UIM, and PIP matters. This role leads attorneys, reviews performance, and ensures compliance with bar requirements, deadlines, and strategic objectives.

The ideal candidate has a J.D., 7+ years of litigation experience in insurance defense or personal injury, and demonstrated management aptitude.

Qualifications

• Licensed to practice law in applicable jurisdictions.
• Minimum of seven years of litigation experience, including insurance defense or personal injury.
• Management experience preferred.
• Willingness and ability to travel as needed (trials, hearings, depositions, meetings).
• Must meet Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements and stay in good standing.

Responsibilities

• Manages subordinates and staff in all activities related to defending GEICO insureds in liability, UM/UIM, and PIP matters.
• Interviews and approves job applicants; conducts performance appraisals; initiates salary adjustments.
• Counsels associates and takes disciplinary action when appropriate; may act as first/second chair at trials and arbitrations.
• Represents GEICO insureds in applicable courts; researches laws and prepares briefs, memoranda, and pleadings; handles discovery and depositions.
• Ensures deadlines are met; monitors office reports and implements improvements in productivity and results.
• Trains and supervises less experienced attorneys; ensures bar requirements are met and ethics standards upheld.
