Job summary

Island County is seeking a Senior Solid Waste Technician for the Solid Waste Division at the Coupeville facility. The role includes operating heavy equipment, monitoring biosolids treatment, and ensuring proper disposal and record-keeping.

Weekend shifts may be required when the Working Foreman is absent. You will perform maintenance, oversee safety, and assist with environmental controls across county facilities.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited high school or GED equivalent.
• Two or more years of post-high school technical training, job-related experience or trade school.
• Valid Washington State Driver’s License within three months of employment.
• Ability to obtain Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator in Training (OIT) certificate within 1 year and Level I certification within 4 years.
• Certificates of training in heavy equipment, welding, or related skills are desirable.

Responsibilities

• Operate and maintain facilities and equipment for solid waste, moderate risk waste, and biosolids operations.
• Process waste at transfer stations and other facilities; separate recyclables and wastes as required.
• Carry out maintenance and/or repairs on equipment and facilities; assist other personnel.
• Assist with processing moderate risk waste after training and keep accurate records.
• Monitor plant operations, record data, and prepare reports.
• Monitor and conduct basic laboratory testing on waste and biosolids systems.
• Assist in training and supervising personnel; cooperate with other departments.
