Job summary

Chelan County Public Works seeks a Solid Waste Manager to lead a team of about eight employees. The role directs solid waste programs, including recycling, hazardous waste, and transfer station operations, while balancing field work across facilities and the public works division.

The ideal candidate has a solid waste background, strong leadership, and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks. Washington driver’s license and SWANA/HW/CEC certifications are required or obtainable within 6 months.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university; three (3) years' experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Washington State Driver's license is required.
  • Certifications: SWANA Certified Manager of Transfer Station System; Household Hazardous Waste/Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generator Collection Operations Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise operations and a team of about eight employees.
  • Direct and coordinate community and rural solid waste programs.
  • Coordinate recycling, hazardous waste disposal, transfer station operations, compost facility operation, landfill closures, illegal dump sites, homeless encampments and related contracts.
  • Split time between the office, facilities and field.

Job description

Are you a proven leader who has excelled in managing a small team? Are you comfortable in a management role but not afraid to get your hands dirty? The award‑winning office of Chelan County Public Works seeks applicants for a full‑time Solid Waste Manager.

Chelan County Public Works operates the Dryden Transfer Station, the Moderate Risk Waste Facility and several solid waste programs. The department also sets solid waste policy for the county. Learn more about our program at www.co.chelan.wa.us/solid-waste-management .


The Solid Waste Manager supervises our operations and a team of about eight employees, most of whom work in our facilities. This position directs and coordinates community and rural solid waste programs, including recycling, hazardous waste disposal, transfer station operations, compost facility operation, landfill closures, illegal dump sites, homeless encampments and other contracts.


A background in solid waste is preferred. But most importantly, we are looking for an engaged, team‑oriented manager who can prioritize multiple tasks - and see them all to completion. This is not an office job; you will be splitting your time between the office, our facilities and the field.


The salary range is step 2 at $7,884 per month to step 8 at $10,415 per month. Starting salary is dependent on qualifications and experience. Employees receive a progression of steps until reaching step 8. The position includes a state retirement system, with a deffered comp program available. Health insurance package includes Medical, Dental, and county contributions to a personal health savings account. Includes 11 paid holidays and 2 personal holidays along with monthly accrued vacation and sick leave.


This position requires a Bachelor`s degree from a four‑year college or university; three (3) years' experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. A Washington State Driver`s license is required, in addition to the following certifications or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire: Solid Waste Association of North America Certified Manager of Transfer Station System, and Household Hazardous Waste/Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generator Collection Operations Certification.
