Solid Waste Technician I (Transfer Station Team)

The Public Works Department’s Solid Waste Division is seeking a customer service‑oriented individual for a seasonal position on the Transfer Station team in Port Townsend. The Solid Waste Technician I is responsible for assisting customers in the scale house, processing cash and credit transactions, and directing traffic on the tipping floor to support safe and efficient operations.

This is a temporary full‑time position through December, with the possibility of an extension.

Responsibilities

• Assist customers in the scale house
• Process cash and credit transactions and collect fees
• Inspect incoming waste for prohibited materials
• Direct traffic during unloading
• Operate the scale house and equipment such as a forklift
• Maintain clean, organized facilities

Minimum Qualifications

• Strong customer service skills
• Attention to safety and ability to work in an active outdoor environment
• Physical ability to stand, walk, and operate tools for up to eight hours per day; occasionally lift up to 25 pounds
• Good judgment and self‑direction

Education and/or Experience

• High school diploma or GED plus demonstrated experience in one or more of: traffic control, manual labor, construction, customer service, and/or cash handling
• OR equivalent combination of education and experience
• Valid WA State Driver’s License

Compensation

Teamsters Grade A4‑A position, starting pay typically $23.70 per hour; full pay range: $23.70 to $29.21 per hour.

Medical benefits, including dental and vision. Retirement through Washington State DRS. 11 paid holidays, PTO, and bereavement leave. May include weekend hours.

Workweek

Facility operated Monday–Saturday; flexible scheduling may be provided depending on operational needs.
