StudySmarter is seeking a Senior Software Engineer for the Elasticsearch - Search Relevance team. You will shape fast, relevant search at scale, implement new features, and tackle bugs on a globally distributed team focused on vector search and relevance.

You will influence technical direction, optimize algorithms, and collaborate across functions to deliver an industry-leading search experience using Java, with opportunities to work close to OS and hardware optimizations.

Qualifications

• Experience with vector similarity on large-scale search platforms.
• Professional experience with search or vector databases; familiarity with HNSW, IVF, or related algorithms.
• Strong core Java skills; knowledge of data structures, concurrency, and lambdas.
• Ability to work autonomously and drive projects from design to delivery.
• Experience with multiple data storage technologies (Elasticsearch, Solr, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Cassandra).
• Proven track record of using AI to accelerate development and optimize code.
• Ability to collaborate across functions and work asynchronously in distributed teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead initiatives to deliver faster, more relevant search in Elasticsearch.
• Design and implement new search features and bug fixes, possibly inventing new algorithms or data structures.
• Collaborate on vector search capabilities within a globally distributed team.
• Improve Elasticsearch search relevance through analysis, experiments, and improvements.
• Triaging and collaborating with community members on issues and pull requests.
• Write idiomatic Java and contribute to code that is maintainable and scalable.
