Job summary

Elastic is seeking a Senior Software Developer to join the Elasticsearch - Search Relevance team. This globally distributed group advances the search experience, including Lucene-related enhancements.

You will design and implement new features, fix bugs, and help shape the technical direction of search capabilities. Join a distributed team that collaborates across continents via email, GitHub, Zoom, and Slack.

Qualifications

• Experience in search or vector databases at scale; familiarity with HNSW/IVF is a plus.
• Strong knowledge of Java and its standard libraries; comfortable with lambdas.
• Ability to own technical design and drive features end-to-end.
• Effective collaboration across remote teams and asynchronous communication.
• Experience with major data storage technologies and AI-accelerated development.

Responsibilities

• Lead initiatives within Elasticsearch to deliver industry-leading search with speed and relevance.
• Contribute to Elasticsearch features, fix bugs, and optimize code for clarity and performance.
• Work with a distributed team focusing on vector search capabilities.
• Be the expert on Elasticsearch relevance and drive improvements.
• Collaborate with global community members on issues and PRs; triage when needed.
• Write idiomatic modern Java; Elasticsearch is 99.8% Java.
