Job summary

Penn Interactive is seeking an experienced software engineer to join the Promotions team. You will design and scale GraphQL APIs, build low-latency services, and own high-impact features end-to-end in an Agile environment.

You’ll tackle production bottlenecks, implement robust monitoring, and mentor colleagues while contributing to multi-client platforms and geographically aware routing. Strong CS fundamentals and API design are essential, with Elixir/Phoenix experience highly valued.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 5 years of software engineering experience.
• Strong CS foundation with data structures, distributed systems, algorithms, and software design.
• Experience with production systems at scale; load testing and tracing.
• On-call rotations and end-to-end release ownership.
• Experience with modern web frameworks and API development (Phoenix, Ruby on Rails, Fast API, Laravel, Node).
• 2+ years designing and evolving GraphQL schemas used by multiple clients (iOS, Android, Web).
• Experience with multi-client/white-label platforms, including geo-based routing and per-client configuration.
• Relational databases: PostgreSQL and MySQL.
• Experience with Kubernetes and containerized services.
• Git/terminal/editor proficiency.
• Testing frameworks: ExUnit, RSpec, Jest, pytest.
• Background job processing: Oban, Exq, Sidekiq, Celery, Beanstalk.
• Asynchronous event handling: Kafka, RabbitMQ, AWS SQS/SNS, Google Pub/Sub.

Responsibilities

• Design, scale, and performance-tune GraphQL APIs, low-latency gRPC services, and SQL queries powering the promotions engine
• Own technical problems of the highest scope and complexity, drafting proposals and presenting to leadership
• Design, architect, and deliver new features end-to-end in a collaborative agile/scrum environment
• Identify bottlenecks and risk in production, driving changes for scalability
• Set up and refine monitoring and alerting in DataDog for the systems you own
• Mentor engineers on the team and across teams that ship into our codebase
• Other duties as required.
