Job summary

Penn Interactive is seeking a software engineer to join the Sportsbook Platform team, delivering GraphQL APIs, gRPC endpoints, and scalable SQL queries powering the marketplace. You will own complex technical problems, design end‑to‑end features in a collaborative Agile environment, and drive improvements for production systems.

You will help maintain monitoring, participate in release rotations, and mentor teammates while contributing to a fast‑paced, sports/entertainment tech stack at Penn

Qualifications

• 3+ years of software engineering experience.
• Strong fundamentals in data structures, distributed systems, algorithms, and software design.
• Experience with production systems at scale and identifying improvements via load testing and tracing.
• Experience with on‑call rotations and end‑to‑end release cycles.
• Strong desire for clean code architecture and software craftsmanship.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, with history of tech specs and runbooks.
• Experience with modern web frameworks and API development (Phoenix, Rails, FastAPI, Laravel, Node).
• Experience designing GraphQL schemas for multi‑client surfaces (iOS, Android, Web).
• Experience building multi‑client/white‑label platforms, geo-based routing, per-client config.
• Strong grasp of PostgreSQL/MySQL, Kubernetes, and containerized environments.
• Experience with testing frameworks (ExUnit, RSpec, Jest, pytest) and background job processing (Oban, Sidekiq, Celery).
• Experience with asynchronous event handling (Kafka, RabbitMQ, AWS SQS/SNS, Google Pub/Sub).
• Nice to have: Absinthe GraphQL, hexagonal architecture, DDD, startup experience, sports/esports interest.

Responsibilities

• Develop, scale, and optimize GraphQL APIs, gRPC endpoints, and SQL queries powering the marketplace.
• Own high‑scope technical problems, proposing solutions to leadership and partner teams.
• Design, architect, and deliver new features end‑to‑end in an Agile/scrum environment.
• Identify bottlenecks and risks in production; drive changes to improve scalability.
• Take on the Sportsbook Platform Support rotation for release and deployment management.
• Set up and refine monitoring/alerting in DataDog for owned systems.
• Mentor engineers across teams through specs, pairing, and code reviews.
• Other duties as required.
