Job summary

The New York Times is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Content Data Products team in a hybrid role based in New York City. You will help convert NYT's publishing content into data products and APIs for internal and external use, working with editors, product, and newsroom partners.

You will own features end-to-end, applying AI to extract meaningful data from archives, while ensuring security, scalability, and observability.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of software engineering experience.
• Fluency in backend technologies (Go, Python, Java or similar) and SQL databases.
• Experience designing and building data backend services and APIs.
• Experience with CI/CD concepts and tooling.
• Experience with infrastructure orchestration and cloud platforms like GCP or AWS.
• Understanding of application and data security best practices.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated experience working collaboratively in cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with product, design, other engineers, and newsroom partners to build content data products and APIs within the NYT's publishing platform.
• Take ownership of features or components from requirements through design, implementation, QA, deployment, and monitoring.
• Use AI to process archives and turn unstructured data into structured data.
• Ensure high code quality, security, and observability of systems.
• Drive architectural excellence via code reviews and best practices for high concurrency, data-intensive systems.
• Champion a quality-first culture by designing automated testing frameworks for reliability at scale.
