Job summary

The New York Times is seeking a Senior Software Engineer for the Content Data Products team in New York City. This hybrid role requires about 2 days in the office weekly, partnering with product, design, data scientists, newsroom, and engineers to turn NYT content into data products.

You will own features end-to-end, apply AI to convert unstructured archives into structured data, and ensure secure, observable, high‑quality systems. Collaboration across functions is essential.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of software engineering experience.
• Fluency in backend technologies (Go, Python, Java) and SQL databases.
• Experience designing data backend services and APIs for reuse.
• Experience with data feeds development and CI/CD concepts.
• Experience with cloud platforms like GCP or AWS and security best practices.
• Strong verbal and written communication; cross-functional collaboration.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with product, design, engineers, and newsroom partners to build data products and APIs.
• Own features from requirements through design, implementation, QA, deployment, and monitoring.
• Use AI to process archives into structured data while deepening understanding of the system.
• Ensure high code quality, security, and observability of services.
• Drive architecture quality with code reviews and best practices for concurrency and data intensity.
• Champion automated testing frameworks to ensure reliability at scale.
• Mentor other engineers to support growth and capability.
• Support journalistic independence and NYT mission in all work.
