Job summary

The New York Times is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the Content Data Products team in our hybrid New York City headquarters. This role reports to an Engineering Director and manages engineers who partner with product, data scientists, and newsroom teams to turn NYT content into data products for insights and experiences.

As part of Publishing, you’ll help evolve the content management systems editors rely on, driving speed and quality while maintaining a unified toolset.

Qualifications

• 2+ years in engineering management or people leadership.
• 5+ years hands-on software engineering experience.
• Demonstrated technical leadership delivering enterprise-scale software.
• Experience hiring, developing and retaining software engineers.
• Familiarity with cloud-based infrastructure (AWS preferred).

Responsibilities

• Manage a team of 6–9 backend engineers.
• Promote collaboration, engineering excellence, and psychological safety.
• Guide technical strategy for high-throughput, low-latency data services and pipelines.
• Collaborate across teams to define roadmaps and deliver impactful projects.
• Ensure reliability, scalability, and performance of services; oversee monitoring and on-call practices.
• Coordinate projects across teams and communicate risks clearly.
