Job summary

The New York Times is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the Content Data Products team in a hybrid role based in New York City. You will manage 6–9 backend engineers and collaborate with product, data science, and newsroom partners to turn NYT content into data products.

You will shape technical strategy, define roadmaps, and ensure high availability and scalable data delivery. Strong leadership and cloud expertise, especially AWS, are essential for success.

Qualifications

• 2+ years of experience in engineering management or people leadership.
• 5+ years of hands-on experience as a software engineer.
• Demonstrated technical leadership in delivering enterprise-scale software projects.
• Experience hiring, developing and retaining software engineers.
• Familiarity with cloud-based infrastructure (AWS preferred).

Responsibilities

• Develop the Team: Manage a team of 6–9 backend engineers.
• Promote a culture of collaboration, engineering excellence, and psychological safety.
• Oversee Technical Strategy: Guide architecture and technology decisions for data delivery and warehousing pipelines.
• Build and Deliver: Define roadmaps, plan sprints, and deliver impactful projects aligned with broader goals.
• Ensure Operational Excellence: Lead reliability, scalability, and performance of services; champion monitoring and on-call practices.
• Collaborate Across Boundaries: Coordinate with other teams and organizations; communicate challenges and risks.
• Demonstrate support and understanding of journalistic independence and NYT’s mission.
