Job summary

Weber Blackstone is seeking an experienced Android engineer to serve as the technical lead for the Weber Connect app. You will own Android architecture, code quality, and standards, working across hardware, cloud, and product teams to deliver a unified connected grill experience.

This hybrid role requires in-office days at the Palatine, IL campus and focuses on deep hardware-adjacent work, including collaboration with firmware teams on communication protocols and with server teams on state

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree or higher in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or closely related field
• 7+ years of Android/mobile platform experience (incl. iOS)
• Strong knowledge of Kotlin, coroutines/flows, and Jetpack Compose
• Delivered large features and led code refactors
• Experience shipping Android apps that communicate with hardware via Bluetooth LE (GATT, state machines, reconnect, bonding)
• Experience overcoming background execution constraints (foreground services, OEM battery limits)
• Owned a mobile build pipeline: signing, testing, and release path

Responsibilities

• Lead the technical design and implementation of major features in the Weber Connect app: from protocol to pixels
• Partner with Firmware to define and version messaging protocols between app and grill
• Provide Product with assessments on Android capabilities, timelines, and readiness
• Maintain app stability amid Android platform changes and long hardware firmware lifecycles
• Build telemetry and diagnostics to diagnose connection issues with grills
• Set and uphold standards for architecture, quality, testing, and bug triage
• Drive a predictable release cadence: CI/CD, staged rollouts, crash monitoring, feature flags

Role Overview Summary

Weber Blackstone is looking for a talented, driven, and experienced Android engineer to serve as the technical lead for the Weber Connect app, which turns our grills into connected products and makes great outdoor cooking easier and more fun. This role owns Android's technical direction: architecture, code quality, and the standards the team builds against. This is deep hardware-adjacent work. You'll partner with Firmware teams on the communication protocols between app and grill, the Server teams on how state syncs to the cloud, and with iOS and the Product teams to keep the experience consistent across platforms and products. You'll also improve what's already in customers' hands which includes a growing portfolio of connected grills, probes, and accessories that our customers rely on for weeknight dinners, backyard parties, and the celebrations they plan their year around. This is a hybrid role requiring in-office days at our Palatine, IL campus.

Responsibilities

• Lead the technical design and implementation of major features in the Weber Connect app: from protocol to pixels
• Partner with Firmware to define and version the messaging protocol between app and grill: shaping the spec, not just consuming it
• Give Product the honest read on what Android can deliver: sequencing, estimates, and launch readiness, against hardware still stabilizing and dates that don't move
• Maintain app stability through constant change: Android platform releases, permission and background-execution changes, Play policy, and a hardware fleet spanning years of firmware versions
• Build the telemetry and diagnostics that make connection problems debuggable when the grill is in a backyard you'll never visit
• Set and maintain the standards the Android team builds against - architecture, code quality, testing, bug triage, and mentor engineers across the team to build the instincts behind them
• Drive a predictable, low-risk release cadence: CI/CD, staged rollouts, crash monitoring, and feature flags

Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor's Degree or higher in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a closely related field
• Work Experience: 7 or more years of experience working in-depth on Android and/or similar mobile platforms (e.g. iOS)
• Deep, nuanced knowledge of Kotlin, Kotlin Coroutines/Flows, Jetpack Compose
• Led the delivery of large features and guided teammates through complex code refactors
• Built and shipped Android applications that communicate with external hardware, including hands-on work with the Bluetooth LE APIs: GATT, connection state machines, reconnect, bonding, and background behavior
• Fought and won against Android's background execution model: foreground services, OEM battery restrictions, sessions that run for hours rather than minutes
• Owned a mobile build pipeline, not just used one: build signing, automated testing, and the path from merge to store release

• Delivering OTA firmware updates from a mobile app
• Device provisioning flows: BLE-to-Wi-Fi handoff
• MQTT, AWS IoT, or similar cloud-to-device messaging

Salary Range: $150,000 - $188,000 * This salary range represents Weber Blackstone's good faith belief of what we reasonably expect to pay the top candidate
